HATTIESBURGE, Mississippi — Aside from school system-generated requirements, Hattiesburg property owners have not seen their ad valorem taxes increase since about the turn of the century.
Discussions, debates and decisions are expected to be the order of the next week as the clock winds down to Sept. 16, the day the Hattiesburg City Council is expected to adopt the tax levy for 2014-15. The council will also approve an initial budget for the new fiscal year that begins on Oct. 1.
The Hattiesburg American reports (http://hatne.ws/1ApEPXw ) a 1.85-mill increase proposed by city administration would fund a $1 million paving program for the city's streets.
In addition to the paving needs, Mayor Johnny DuPree also appears to be looking hard at city worker pay rates.
