TEL AVIV, ISRAELI (CNN) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has left for the U.S. Sunday. He boarded a plane in Tel Aviv.

Before taking off, he spoke about his controversial trip, which has been criticized by some Democrats and the White House.

Netanyahu called his trip "crucial" and said he plans to do all he can to "ensure the security of Israel's future."

One reason for all the controversy is that Netanyahu is expected to speak before Congress this week and criticize U.S. led negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.

Some Democrats say it's inappropriate for a foreign leader to counter the president's foreign policy in such a high-profile forum.

Another issue - Netanyahu was invited to the U.S. by Republican Party leaders, but neither side gave the White House much notice before announcing the visit.

The White House has called the move a breach of protocol.
