HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Hattiesburg is back to square one in its quest to find a solution for its wastewater treatment issues.
City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to allow Mayor Johnny DuPree to terminate its agreement with Groundworx, LLC, which authorized the Hattiesburg-based company to design, construct and operate a land-application system to disperse the city's treated wastewater.
The Hattiesburg American reports (http://hatne.ws/X149Ha ) the Groundworx agreement had been in limbo for the past seven months over the system's $141 million price tag and the steep sewer rate hikes required to fund it.
The council also voted to accept a reworked court order/consent decree that will reset the clock for having a revamped treatment system designed, under construction and in operation.
