American Eagle to beginmercial air service at Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional ... - The Republic

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — The U.S. Department of Transportation has signed off on American Eagle as well as an Essential Air Service annual subsidy of about $7 million to provide air service from Hattiesburg-Laurel and Meridian airports.

Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport Executive Director Thomas Heanue told the Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/1r4cxOP ) American Eagle will offer two daily flights to Dallas-Fort Worth.

Heanue said the daily service on the Canadair Regional Jet 200 will be shared between Hattiesburg-Laurel and the city of Meridian.

"This is the culmination of a lot of hard work by a number of people," Heanue said. "We took our best shot at the last shot we had, and we believe we hit a home run. We've got a great service to a great hub, and now we've got to put people on the planes."

American Eagle was selected among three bids to replace Silver Airways, which currently connects passengers to Atlanta.

Silver Airways notified the Department of Transportation in April that it intended to pull out of four Mississippi markets, including Hattiesburg-Laurel, Meridian, Tupelo and Greenville, as well as Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

Silver Airways is continuing service to those areas until a replacement carrier is found and approved.

Heanue said the new flight schedules still were being coordinated, as were pricing and hooking into the American Airlines world-wide system.

State auditor: Findings in Hattiesburg audit are of great concern - WDAM-TV

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

State auditor Stacey Pickering sent a letter to Hattiesburg City Council President Kim Bradley Monday after reviewing the city's annual audit, and he said the two findings in the audit "are of great concern."

According the state auditor's office, they cannot conduct audits on municipalities and said in Monday's letter that all issues with Hattiesburg's audit must be addressed with Nicholson and Company, the auditing office that conducted the city audit for the 37 year in a row.

Pickering's letter comes just 10 days after Bradley requested the state auditor review the city's annual audit.

Hattiesburg audit raises concerns among council, additional audit sought - WDAM-TV

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Hattiesburg City Council received its annual audit this week, but there have been more questions this time around than usual.

Concerns of some members are the three qualified opinions submitted with this year's audit. There have never been opinions attached to an audit in the 37 years of Nicholson and Company's work with Hattiesburg.

Three units of the Hattiesburg government merited a qualified opinion in this year's annual audit: activities of both the government and business, as well as the water and sewer system.

One issue is that the city did not have an actuarial report to provide for the audit. That's something that is required, and according to CPA Paige Johnson is "an acceptable practice... every three to five years."

It's related to some procedures regarding post employment benefits for city employees, but without an actuary to conduct the report, the auditors cannot comply with government standards to report what it finds.

The water and sewer departments were considered to have a "material weakness", which means that policies in place for utility cutoff are not being uniformly enforced, and inconsistencies are also found in late payments, all of which could affect budgetary projections and ensure compliance with contracts, according to the audit.

"The audit is what it is," Mayor Johnny DuPree told the council Tuesday night. "It's done. It's completed. Your objective is to acknowledge it so we can move forward. If you want to do more than that, that's up to you."

And the council chose to do just that. A 3-2 vote will soon send a letter to the state auditor's to conduct an additional audit.

"Whether we get the answers we want or don't get the answers we want, I think the audit needs to be looked at," council President Kim Bradley said.

What was not specifically mentioned in the public audit is a letter to the council that was obtained by WDAM's investigative team. It offers nine recommendations, most of which deal with water and sewer issues.

An internal auditor was recommended for the city, as well as close attention to the city being in compliance with existing water and sewer revenue bond requirements and any new contractual agreements. The last recommendation in the letter is a system for tracking "unusual fuel consumption" on city fuel cards.

All of those things stand only as recommendations, but it's certainly something that has alarmed the city council. When or if the state auditor takes a second look at this report is yet to be determined.

Hattiesburg Clinic sports medicine receives awards - WDAM-TV

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from Hattiesburg Clinic

Hattiesburg Clinic Sports Medicine recently received two awards at the 2014 Mississippi Athletic Trainers' Association (MATA) Conference in Biloxi, Miss.

The entire staff of the department of Sports Medicine was awarded the 2014 MATA Sports Medicine Person of the Year for their contribution to the field of athletic training and community support. Specifically mentioned were their fundraising efforts for an employee, Chad Davis, whose spouse was diagnosed with stage three-breast cancer.

Shortly after being diagnosed, Davis' spouse, Emily, was unable to work full-time and the family was in need of financial support. The department planned multiple fundraisers that involved their coworkers, families, community members and the MATA members. Chad states, "My wife and I are very thankful for those who went above and beyond to help us in a time of need. I don't know of a group more deserving of this award." The money from these fundraisers helped the family with medical expenses and provided financial support.

Additionally, Gary Stroud, Athletic Trainer with Hattiesburg Clinic Sports Medicine, was awarded the 2014 MATA Athletic Trainer of the year. "Gary exemplifies the role of an athletic trainer," says Mike Williamson, director of Sports Medicine. "A great example of this took place last year when Gary performed life saving measures for an official at one of his games." To receive this award, an individual must show outstanding contributions to the profession of athletic training. Stroud was nominated by his peers for his dedication and professionalism as an athletic trainer.

"It's an honor to receive both of these awards," says Williamson. "As a group, we strive to make a difference in the lives of the athletes we work with and the communities we serve, and I believe these awards are a direct reflection of that."
