Sacred Heart-Griffin (Ill.) rising senior quarterback Gabe Green (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) confirmed to the Hattiesburg American Monday evening that he officially committed to Southern Miss.

Green, who also held offers from Air Force and Northern Illinois, among others, is the second class of 2015 prospect to commit to Southern Miss. Oak Grove linebacker Isaiah Spencer gave his verbal pledge on June 18.

The left-handed Green cited the relationships he built with the Golden Eagle coaching staff as the biggest factor in his recruitment. In fact, Green and head coach Todd Monken – an Illinois native – go back further than this year’s recruitment phase.

“When (Monken) was (offensive coordinator) at Oklahoma State, he recruited (quarterback) Wes Lunt, who is from where I’m from,” Green said. “I actually visited Wes at Oklahoma State once, and I met coach Monken then.”

As a junior, Green helped lead his Sacred Heart-Griffin squad to a 14-0 and the Class 5A State Championship. He threw for 3,284 yards, as well as 40 touchdowns to just two interceptions. He also rushed for more than 700 yards and scored 16 touchdowns on the ground.

Green said he’s not accustomed to the different weather elements Hattiesburg features, but he’s looking forward to a change.

“I love the heat,” he said. “We had a really, really cold winter (in Illinois), and I hated it. So that’s kind of perfect.”

In the state championship game against four-time defending champions Lombard-Montini (Ill.), Green scored three rushing touchdowns (56 yards, 17, and 5 respectively) to lead his squad to victory.

As a sophomore, Green threw for 1,853 yards while completing 139 of 203 passes. He had 19 touchdowns and four interceptions.

According to the (Springfield, Ill.) State-Journal Register, Green’s SHG squad set the Illinois High School Association record for most points in a season (744), which is 50 more than the previous record.

Weight room construction begins

Pete Taylor Park, the home of Southern Miss baseball, has long been one of the top collegiate baseball facilities in the country and Southern Miss took another step to ensure that it stays that way for years to come.

Southern Miss Athletics is pleased to announce that construction has begun on a 2,400-square foot baseball specific weight room building that will be erected under the grandstand on the third base side. The weight room was designed by Foil Wyatt Architects and Planners PLLC of Jackson, and constructed by B.W. Sullivan Building Contractor of Hattiesburg and has an expected completion date this fall. The building has been made possible by private donations.

“This is the work of several individuals who see and share the vision of Southern Miss baseball,” Southern Miss head coach Scott Berry said.

“With this facility on site, it will make Pete Taylor Park one of very few college baseball programs with their own strength and conditioning facility. This addition will enable our players to develop and improve in this important part of the game.”

The facility will include equipment to outfit the baseball team as well as an office for a member of the Southern Miss strength and conditioning staff.
