JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The city of Meridian is considering putting a cap on what wrecker companies can charge customers. That led us to see what companies were charging customers locally.

It's been over two years since the city has had an ordinance regulating wrecker companies, and even though there are no rules in place, reputable companies say there are no hidden fees, and they always try to charge a fair rate.

The wrecker rotation agreement in the city of Jackson expired in October of 2013, along with it, the agreed rates wrecker companies would charge you for a tow.

Back then it was $75.00 Now companies have raised rates to $125.00.

Its a number the city and the companies agreed upon but nothings is in writing.

Wrecker companies say if they charged less, they would be losing money, and couldn't stay in business.

Of course every tow is different and fees can go higher if the wrecker operator is on the scene for longer than expected, and also if the car has to be hauled a long distance.

Having a car hauled from a wreck worked by the Mississippi State Patrol is even higher. On the first of the year, they came to an agreement with wrecker companies in the metro, to charge $200.00 to tow cars.

Right now there is not a state law that limits what wrecker companies can charge. Bills have been introduced, but state law makers have failed to pass any of them.
