Cochran makes last stop in Hattiesburg before primary - WDAM-TV

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Sen. Thad Cochran made a stop at his Hattiesburg campaign headquarters Wednesday with less than one week before the June 3 primary.

"I'm encouraged," said Cochran of the support going into the primary.

During the event, Cochran told a packed room of supporters that he wants to stay in Washington to make sure what is passed in the United States Senate is good for Mississippi and this region.

"There's a wide range of federal activity in this state," said Cochran as he explained his service on the appropriations committee. "As a member of that committee, I've had an opportunity to help influence the appropriations and the support of activity that not only support our national security interest but also serve the economic interest of the people of our state."

The past few weeks have been heated between the Cochran and McDaniel campaigns after four men were arrested in connection to a photo posted of Cochran's wife in her assisted living room. Cochran said Wednesday the acts of those involved were "amateurish" and that his campaign was leaving the case up to the local officials and investigators.

Cochran said he "looks forward to winning the election" and plans to serve a full six-year term.
