Former Forrest County Sheriff passes away - WDAM-TV

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A former Forrest County Sheriff has passed away.

Gene Walters, 86, died at his home in Petal Monday. Walters was known for being a Hattiesburg policeman, a Forrest County Deputy Sheriff, a Constable and a Sheriff.

After more than 40 years of law enforcement, he retired in 1992. One local Hattiesburg establishment where he often visited was Coney Island Cafe. There, many who knew him say they will miss seeing him sitting on the second stool eating his breakfast and lunch.

“We're all going to miss him and he was a very good man,” said Coney Island Cafe Debbie Bardwell. “He usually gets his specials and today was his special day because today was chicken and dumplings.”

Walters funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
