Southern Miss head football coach Todd Monken confirmed to the Hattiesburg American on Monday that the university has hired Jon Williams as associate head coach and director of player personnel.


Williams, who spent the past seven seasons at Itawamba Community College - four of which have been as the team's head coach - replaces Steve Buckley, who stepped down last week after two seasons to pursue a private business venture.


Williams had a career record of 21-16 with three runner-up finishes in the MACJC North and one playoff appearance at ICC.


Prior to landing the head coaching job at ICC, he served three seasons there as the team's offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.


Williams has also served as an assistant coach at Mississippi College, Wingate University in North Carolina, East Central Community College and Wayne County High School.


The Panama City, Fla., native was also head coach at Locust Fork High School in Alabama before arriving at ICC.


McCoy advances to Nationals


Southern Miss' Randy McCoy recorded a personal-best time of 13.78 in qualifying for the 2014 NCAA National Outdoor Championship set for June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.


McCoy placed fourth in his respective heat. On Friday, McCoy recorded a time of 13.82 while placing second in his heat.


Another football transfer


Slot receiver Casey Martin confirmed to the Hattiesburg American on Sunday that he will transfer to Southern Miss in August.


The former Houston Cougar will have two years left to play, and will be able to play at Southern Miss immediately.


The 5-foot-9, 175-pound Huffman, Texas, native had four catches for 20 yards in three seasons with the Cougars. Martin redshirted as a freshman in 2011.


Ifeanyichukwu transfers


Southern Miss center Ude Ifeanyichukwu will transfer to Kentucky Wesleyan, according to a press release from the Division II college.


Ifeanyichukwu (6-foot-10, 235 pounds) spent one season at Southern Miss, and will have one year of eligibility remaining. The native Nigerian saw limited action for the Golden Eagles last season, averaging less than one point and one rebound per game in 16 contests.


Hardwood Club golf tourney set


Southern Miss men’s basketball coach Doc Sadler will host the Hardwood Club Golf Classic on June 20 at Hattiesburg Country Club.


The cost to enter the Classic is $200 per person or $800 per four-man team. Registration includes 18 holes or golf, a cart, lunch, a collared golf shirt, a golf umbrella and beverages on the course. Following play, a barbecue buffet dinner will be served. For those interested in just coming for dinner, the cost is $30 per person and it will begin at approximately 5 p.m.
