Hattiesburg considers dropping curbside recycling - Mississippi News Now

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree says the city of Hattiesburg can't afford to consider its current curbside recycling program and is looking at other options.

But the Hattiesburg American (hatne.ws/1t0sRUy) reports that a plan for manned and unmanned recycling sites devised by a committee would cost $455,000 to create, because the city would have to buy large bins and other equipment.

Some council members are balking at that cost, saying it's higher that the current cost of the curbside contract. Supporters, though, note that it's a one-time expense and ongoing costs would be lower. DuPree said the cost would be about half of projected curbside expenditures over three years.

Between 20 percent and 30 percent of Hattiesburg residents participate in its curbside program.
