HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — Hattiesburg officials are considering not renewing its contract for curbside recycling when it expires at the end of the year.

But the city is hoping to establish an in-house program that would utilize manned drop-off collection sites while re-emphasizing the education of school children to the importance of recycling.

The Hattiesburg American reports (http://hatne.ws/1pKOMtH ) a committee of city employees, educators, recycling enthusiasts and others presented a plan to the city council Monday that would pick up after the current recycling program is phased out.

The new program would feature large collection bins at the city's Department of Public Works, Tatum Park, while another 11 satellite collection sites would be created at Hattiesburg schools.

Mayor Johnny DuPree said he would not recommend renewing the contract with Waste Pro.
