HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree says a clinic for city employees and their families has saved workers and the city about $77,000 through its first seven weeks.
He says that if the trend continues, savings could be as much as a half-million dollars. First-year savings are projected at $100,000 to $180,000 in medical costs and insurance premiums.
The Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/13LZwns ) reports that DuPree reported to the City Council about the clinic Tuesday night.
DuPree says that because Hattiesburg is self-insured, premium rates it receives from an underwriter can fluctuate every 90 days rather than being locked for a year.
He says that if the city's medical claims fall, so should its rates, and September savings should affect December premiums.
