HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — The city of Hattiesburg is re-applying for a $200,000 federal grant to clean up the site of an old landfill along the Leaf River.
WDAM-TV in Laurel/Hattiesburg reports (http://bit.ly/1zQ7EAr ) the city was turned down for a Brownfields grant two years ago.
The site is located on about 10 acres of city-owned land along the Leaf River. It had been the site of an unpermitted landfill which was closed in the 1970s.
Brownfields properties are sites that can be redeveloped but have potential environmental issues. They include former industrial sites, gasoline stations, abandoned buildings and vacant properties.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency allocates money for the program.
City officials say they have $80,000 from the state to use on the project.
The application deadline is Dec. 15.
